The international standard of maritime signal flags concerns flags for all characters of the alphabet and the numbers. The meaning of the flags is universal and defined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Signal flags used to be the main way to communicate between ships. This type of communication is still in use but modern forms of communication are taking over, especially radio communication.
